Womens Refuge Work

Women's refuges, also known as shelters or safe houses, provide essential support and resources for women who have experienced domestic violence, abuse, or homelessness. We recently expanded our outreach work to facilitate creative workshops, sound healing, meditation & movement to womens refuges & safe spaces within the city. While in temporary housing at refuges a lot of women can feel displaced, isolated or are struggling with self esteem & low mental health. Through community engagement & participation in informal classes we help to build a sense of community, conversation & support & some much needed relief from the stresses of displacement, promoting movement, unity & connection. Here are some of the key benefits womens refuges offer:

  1. Safety and Security: Women's refuges provide a safe and secure environment where women and their children can escape from immediate danger. These facilities are often equipped with security measures to ensure the safety of residents.

  2. Emergency Accommodation: Refuges offer temporary accommodation for women and their children who are fleeing abusive situations. This ensures they have a place to stay while they make plans for their future and access support services.

  3. Emotional Support: Women's refuges provide emotional support and counseling to help women heal from the trauma of abuse. Trained staff and volunteers offer empathy, understanding, and a non-judgmental environment where women can share their experiences.

  4. Access to Resources: Refuges connect women with essential resources such as legal aid, medical care, counseling services, and housing assistance. They help women navigate complex systems and access the support they need to rebuild their lives.

  5. Community and Peer Support: Being in a refuge allows women to connect with others who have experienced similar challenges. This sense of community and peer support can be empowering and validating, reducing feelings of isolation and shame.

  6. Children's Services: Many refuges offer specialised services for children who have witnessed or experienced abuse. These may include counselling, educational support, and recreational activities to help children cope and heal.

  7. Empowerment and Education: Refuges often provide educational workshops and empowerment programs to help women develop skills, build confidence, and regain control over their lives. These may include job training, financial literacy, and self-defense classes.

  8. Transition Support: Women's refuges assist residents in transitioning to independent living once they are ready to leave the refuge. This may involve helping women secure permanent housing, employment, and ongoing support services.

Women's refuges play a crucial role in supporting survivors of domestic violence and abuse on their journey to safety, healing, and independence. They provide a lifeline for women and children in crisis, offering hope and a pathway to a brighter future. We hope that we can support women on their journeys to healing & regaining their confidence through engaging with women & providing valuable physical & mental health support in refuges across the city <3
