Suncatcher workshops: The power of creative play

We were working hard in the summer months, extending our outreach to further charities and communities in need, working with womens' refuges & those escaping the hardships of domestic abuse & family difficulties, providing them with a much needed creative release in which they could connect to their creative expression & create something for themselves.

These workshops were accessed by both adults & children - and hugely enjoyed by both! This simple yet effective form of playtime helped us connect to the sun & summer months, while creating something beautiful for the homes of those who played! creative play offers a vital space for both adults and children to slow down, explore, and express themselves. One fun and accessible way to engage in creative play is by painting sun catchers. Whether you're 6 or 60, this simple activity can be both joyful and enriching.

Why Creative Play Matters

  1. Stress Relief: For adults, creative play can serve as a mental break, allowing us to disconnect from daily stresses. Painting, in particular, engages the mind in a meditative process, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation.

  2. Develops Focus and Patience: For children, activities like painting sun catchers help develop focus and patience. It encourages them to take their time, work with details, and feel a sense of accomplishment when they see their finished creation.

  3. Sparks Imagination: Creativity knows no bounds. Painting sun catchers allows kids and adults alike to play with colors, designs, and personal expression. It’s a space where the only limit is your imagination.

  4. Fosters Connection: Creative play can be a shared experience, bringing people together. Families can paint sun catchers side by side, exchanging ideas and bonding through the act of making something beautiful.

The Benefits of Painting Sun Catchers

  • Mindful Expression: Sun catchers are a soothing canvas for exploring color and design, making the act of painting a mindful, calming practice.

  • Hands-On Fun for All Ages: It's a tactile, engaging activity that everyone can enjoy. No prior artistic skills are required, making it perfect for adults looking for a creative outlet or children eager to explore art.

  • A Beautiful Reward: Once finished, the sun catcher is not only a piece of art but also a functional item that brightens your space. Watching sunlight stream through your hand-painted design adds a touch of magic to any room.

Creative play is vital for both children and adults, and painting sun catchers is a delightful way to nurture that side of ourselves. It’s about the process of creating, not the outcome. So gather your materials, let your imagination run free, and enjoy the simple, joyful act of bringing a little colour into your world.
