Sun, Colour & Creativity: @Sefton Park Palm House

This summer, we brought a little colour, creativity and sunshine to Sefton Park Palm House with a free family craft session making colourful sun catchers.

As part of the summer holidays, we were asked to create something that was free, accessible and genuinely enjoyable for families — a chance to slow down, get creative and make something they could take home and enjoy long after the session, all in the amazing beautiful heritage site of liverpools Palm House

A little creativity goes a long way

Using simple sun catcher shapes, colourful pens and ribbons, families could create their own designs inspired by sunshine, rainbows, flowers, clouds and everything in between.

The finished pieces were wonderfully varied — from bright rainbow suns to colourful flowers and playful characters. Once the light catches them, the translucent colours really come to life.

It was a lovely reminder that you don't need complicated materials or elaborate activities to create something special.

Creativity for everyone

One of the things we loved most about the session was seeing people of all ages and abilities getting involved.

Some children jumped straight in and chose their colours, while others took their time carefully deciding how they wanted their sun catcher to look. Parents, grandparents and grown-ups joined in too — because creativity isn't just for children.

Creating an inclusive space where families can participate at their own pace, without pressure to produce a "perfect" result, is at the heart of what we do.

Making memories, not just crafts

Set within the beautiful surroundings of the Palm House, the session became more than simply making a craft.

It was a chance for families to spend time together, meet other people in the community, try something new and enjoy a creative activity without worrying about the cost.

For families during the school holidays, free activities like this can make a real difference — providing something meaningful to look forward to and somewhere welcoming to spend time together.

Simple, sustainable & worthwhile

We also wanted the activity to be mindful of what we use and how we use it. By working with simple, reusable and thoughtfully selected materials, we can create activities that are colourful and engaging without needing to be excessive.

For us, sustainability isn't about making creativity complicated. It's about being thoughtful about materials, encouraging people to make and reuse, and showing that meaningful experiences don't have to cost a lot.

A little more colour for the community

We're passionate about creating opportunities for people to connect through creativity, wellbeing and community.

This session was a beautiful example of what can happen when you bring those things together: a welcoming space, a simple creative activity, families spending time together and lots of colour filling the Palm House.
