it's easy for us to fall into the hyper independence trap, convincing ourselves not to rely on others, that we have to do everything by ourselves and in extreme cases isolate from those we love.
When times get tough it is often the element of community and unity that gets people through their trouble, at Flowstate we pride ourselves in looking out for everyone at any of our sessions and aim to incorporate the idea of community into each of them.
There are many factors as to what makes community so important so lets delve into them and what they mean for spirituality and wellness.
Support and Safety
Support and safety is one of the most important parts of being in a community, not only that you have people to lean on and go to when you need it but that you also feel calm and safe around this group of people.
Having a safe space doesn't need to be a place it can be whatever and whoever you want!
At Flowstate during our yoga sessions and creative workshops we aim to make this time a safe space for you through calm and grounding activities whilst ensuring everyone feels welcome even if you've never set foot on a yoga mat before.
A sense of belonging
A big part of yoga and mindfulness is finding compassion for ourselves and others inside and outside of the community, knowing that you belong somewhere and to something bigger can push us to become better people.
If you've ever been to one of Flowstate's yoga sessions you might have heard yoga teacher Abi referring to the 'collective' which generally refers to a community or group who practices together.
The community aspect can often enhance the yoga experience as we foster support and a sense of belonging throughout the group practice.
Influence and learning
As strong willed as we tend to be it is still important notice who is around us, like the previous two points do we feel safe in this group? does it push us to do better?
A good community will constantly have something new for you to learn, within yoga and mindfulness itself whilst we're all on different journeys, a good group can bounce off each other, sharing ideas and advice.
Sometimes we also need encouraged to keep going, on our worst days the push and influence of those around us can ensure we don't give up on our personal goals.
Our independent journey often works best intertwined with the support of others.
Connection
In the same way yoga, sound bowls and general mediation can connect us to our mind, body and soul on an individual basis, sharing that space with someone else can help us deeper connect to them too.
Additionally, bonding with people over creativity can be some of the best ways to harbour connection and community, having a mutual interest or passion in something can often add fuel to our passions.
In general human connection and socialisation is good for the soul even if its just as small as having a coffee and a laugh with someone.
