All paint no sip: Staff wellness day - London skyline

We were delighted to host a wonderful mindful art workshop paint (and no sip) at a London-based staff wellness day for staff from the YMCA charity where the work is often emotionally demanding & the energy is giving! This workshop helped to create space for staff to pause, reconnect, and restore & give themselves what they give to others - that filling your cup is not a luxury—it’s essential.

Set against the symbolic backdrop of the London skyline, the session invited staff to paint their own interpretations of the city they serve—layering colour, texture, and emotion into something uniquely personal. No prior artistic experience was needed, just openness and presence.

Why Creative Workshops Matter in Support-Focused Environments

Working within the charity sector often means holding space for others’ challenges, trauma, and transformation. Over time, this can lead to emotional fatigue and disconnection from self. Creative practices like painting provide a gentle but powerful counterbalance.

Art allows for expression beyond words. It gives form to feelings that may otherwise remain internalised and offers a release that is both grounding and uplifting. Through the act of creating, participants engage different parts of the brain—supporting emotional processing, reducing stress, and encouraging a sense of calm.

Building Community Through Shared Creativity

One of the most meaningful aspects of the workshop was the sense of togetherness it fostered. Staff who may usually connect through structured roles and responsibilities were able to interact in a new, relaxed way.

Painting side by side encouraged conversation, laughter, and mutual encouragement. It softened hierarchies and created a level playing field where everyone was simply a participant, exploring colour and creativity together.

This kind of shared experience strengthens internal relationships, builds trust, and reinforces a sense of collective identity—vital elements in any organisation, especially one rooted in care and community.

The Symbolism of the Skyline

The skyline itself became a powerful metaphor. For some, it represented resilience—the strength of a city that holds so many stories. For others, it reflected diversity, with each building different yet part of a whole.

Staff were encouraged to interpret the skyline in their own way: abstract, realistic, vibrant, muted. This freedom mirrored the diversity within the team and the women they support—each with their own experiences, perspectives, and journeys.

Supporting Wellbeing from Within

Workshops like this are not just “nice extras”—they are preventative wellbeing practices. By offering staff time to slow down, engage creatively, and connect with one another, organisations invest in the sustainability of their teams.

In turn, supported and nourished staff are better equipped to continue their vital work within the community.

A Simple Practice, A Lasting Impact

What began as a few hours of painting became something more lasting: a reminder of the importance of care—not just for those the charity serves, but for those doing the serving.

Through creativity, the team reconnected with themselves, each other, and the shared purpose that brings them together.

And in every brushstroke of the skyline, there was a quiet but powerful message: community starts from within.
